Macau 2023 growing gaming industry receipts hit US$23.5 B, triple 2022 figure

(Macau).- Gaming sector pocketed MOP188.5 billion (US$23.5 billion) in receipts last year, up over 308 per cent year on year.
As per the Statistics and Census Service, receipts particularly coming from games of chance totalled some MOP183.6 billion – or 63 per cent of the 2019 level. The 2023 total was up more than three times on the preceding year.
When it comes to expenditure, exclusive of taxes, the gaming sector – including six casino operators and three engaging in pool betting and lotteries – shelled out over MOP80 billion. It rose 98.6 per cent from the previous year of 2022.
Operating expenses, MOP31.7 billion, accounted for about 39.6 per cent of the total outlay, while some MOP18 billion was associated with purchases of goods, commissions, and customer rebates, or about 22.6 per cent of the total.
The former went up by 16 percentage points and the latter by 13.4 percentage points year on year.
Another big share, employee compensation, was down from 46.7 per cent in 2022 to 25 per cent last year, totalling some MOP20.17 billion.
Expenses unrelated to operation also rose 20 per cent year on year to MOP10.07 billion.
Some MOP19.5 billion was spent on complimentary services and items for customers, such as accommodation and food and beverages.
Spending on management services was about MOP5.4 billion, while marketing research and publicity was nearly MOP2.1 billion.
The three above rose more than three times, two times, and two times, respectively.
In 2023, the gaming sector contributed a gross value added of MOP135.37 billion to the domestic economy – up 345.8 per cent on the previous year.
